Germany Halde Haniel

The slag heap “Halde Haniel” is the highest accessible heap in the Ruhr area (185 m above sea level). A modern way of the cross leads to a summit cross at about two thirds of the total height. On top of the heap there’s an installation of the artist Augustín Ibarrola with more than hundred colorful painted railway sleepers installed in a curved line.
From the top you have a wide view around the north-western part of the Ruhr area, e.g. to the Power plant of Scholven, the “Gasometer” of Oberhausen (www.gasometer.de, definitively also worth a recommendation), the “Tetraeder“ of Bottrop (coordinates: 51° 31′ 39″ N, 6° 57′ 36″ E), the “Bramme” on top of the “Schurenbach-heap” of Essen (coordinates: 51° 30′ 43″ N, 7° 1′ 5″ O) and so on.

Photography Tips

It's a wide view around from the top so good visiblity, the light of a later afternoon and some impressive clouds could be helpful.
