Subterranean Symmetry: The Monolithic Colonnade

Photography Tips

Position yourself perfectly in the center of the platform to capture the striking depth of the station, using the vanishing point to anchor the composition. A 16–35mm wide-angle lens is ideal here to emphasize the sheer scale of the repeating, stark black pillars and the expansive, illuminated ceiling grid overhead. Don't stress about nailing absolute perfect symmetry while dodging commuters; you can easily square up the vertical lines and perfectly center the vanishing point later in Lightroom or Photoshop to achieve that pure, clinical aesthetic.

Shoot with an aperture around f/8 to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness from the nearest columns all the way down the tunnel. Because this is a BVG transit station, using a tripod technically requires a prior permit and will immediately draw the attention of transit security. To maintain a low profile, shoot handheld. The frosted ceiling panels provide excellent, diffused light, but don't hesitate to bump up your ISO to keep your shutter speed sharp. Since the U5 line at Brandenburger Tor is a major tourist hub, you will need to arrive very early in the morning or late at night to capture the platform completely empty and preserve the clean, minimalist geometry of the space.
