Germany Kuhturm / Freiheitsturm Burg

The Kuhturm, also known as the Freiheitsturm, is a historic landmark and one of the most prominent sights in Burg. As an integral part of the old city wall, its name dates back to the Middle Ages when citizens drove their cattle through its gate to the surrounding pastures. Today, this massive stone structure stands as a proud piece of the city's heritage and a fantastic architectural subject.

Space is quite limited in front of the tower because the street is narrow, so bringing a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the entire structure from a short distance. The tower is situated on slightly higher ground than the landscape behind it, where the terrain slopes downwards along the rest of the city wall. Because of this elevated position, it is a brilliant spot for both sunrise and sunset photography, offering a clear view of the sky as a backdrop and plenty of time to catch the best light.

Reaching the tower is straightforward, and parking is very convenient. You can park directly on Freiheitstraße, the same street where the tower is located, leaving you with practically no walking distance to the spot. Since Burg is famously known as the "City of Towers" (Stadt der Türme), it is highly recommended to combine your visit with a walking tour. After capturing the Kuhturm, you can easily explore the historic old town on foot and discover the many other fascinating towers scattered throughout the city.
