Germany Hexenturm Burg

The Hexenturm is one of the most famous and historically fascinating landmarks in Burg. Originally built in the 11th century as a square guard tower, it was reconstructed into its current rounded shape in the late 15th century. It is seamlessly integrated into the town's massive medieval city wall. While it looks like a charming, picturesque little tower today, it holds a dark past: during the 17th century, it served as a prison for women accused of witchcraft and features a six-meter-deep dungeon. The dramatic, steep drop-off of the terrain right next to the thick defensive walls adds a lot of character to the scene.

The tower is situated in a narrow alleyway, meaning you will not have much room to step back. Bringing a wide-angle lens is highly recommended if you want to fit the entire structure and the adjacent city wall into a single frame.

Getting here is very straightforward, and parking is convenient. You can park your car directly on Turmstraße, the same small street where the tower is located, minimizing your walking distance. Just a few steps from the tower, you will find the historic Katzentreppe (Cat Stairs), which lead down the steep hill from the elevated old town to the lower area known as Unterm Hagen. While the lower section is less spectacular, the stairs give a great sense of the town's geography. Since Burg is widely celebrated as the "City of Towers," visiting this location is a perfect opportunity to continue on a walking tour to discover the many other preserved towers scattered throughout the historical center.
