Burgstall Torfelsen is a fascinating historical site located high above the village of Unteremmendorf in the beautiful Altmühltal valley in Bavaria. This former medieval spur castle is best known for its striking natural rock arch, which once served as the entrance to the fortress and formed a narrow bridge over the defensive moat. The site also features a 25-meter deep cave that was originally integrated into the castle grounds. While only traces of the medieval structure remain today, the imposing rock formations and the rich history make it a uniquely rewarding location for adventurous photographers.

Photography Tips

Capturing this spot can be quite challenging due to the uneven terrain and the towering nature of the rock formations. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to fit the massive natural rock arch and the surrounding forest into a single frame. The dense woodland can create strong contrasts between light and shadow, so shooting on overcast days or during the softer light of early morning can help balance your exposure. Be sure to explore different angles around the rock gate, but proceed with caution—the rugged, root-covered ground can become very slippery and presents a significant tripping hazard, especially after it has rained.

Travel Information

To reach the Burgstall Torfelsen, you will need to embark on a short hike. There are two main ways to get there: you can either park in the village of Unteremmendorf and hike up a steep trail, or you can park at the designated parking area further up the hill and walk down along the scenic Altmühltal-Panoramaweg. Sturdy hiking boots are absolutely essential for this location, as the path is unpaved, steep in sections, and can be difficult to navigate when wet.
