The Uenglinger Tor is a magnificent historical landmark in the Hanseatic city of Stendal, one of the largest cities in the beautiful Altmark region of northern Saxony-Anhalt. Built between 1450 and 1460, this striking brick Gothic gate tower is one of two surviving gates of the medieval city wall. With its intricate brickwork, arched passage, and charming corner turrets, it is widely considered one of the most beautiful city gates in northern Germany and an absolute must-see for architectural photography.

Photography Tips

This remarkably well-preserved gate tower looks spectacular from all sides and perspectives, offering endless compositional possibilities. The absolute best time to shoot is during sunset; if you position yourself correctly along the street, you can capture the warm, golden sunlight shining directly through the gate's arched passage, creating a beautiful and dramatic glow.

Travel Information

Stendal is currently very well connected by rail, making the train a highly convenient option for visiting the city. If you are traveling by car, reaching Stendal will become even easier in the near future once the A14 autobahn extension is fully completed. The Uenglinger Tor is easily accessible by foot from the city center, allowing you to seamlessly integrate it into a walking tour along the remnants of the historic city wall. While you are there, it is highly recommended to also visit the city's other famous gate, the Tangermünder Tor.
