Germany Burg Walternienburg

The Wasserburg Walternienburg is a historic moated castle situated in the village of Walternienburg, a district of Zerbst/Anhalt. While the castle is no longer completely intact, the surviving structures are highly impressive. The site features a well-preserved medieval stone ring wall and a striking 30-meter-high square keep topped with a charming 16th-century half-timbered construction. Set within the scenic Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, this idyllic and deeply historical location is a fantastic subject for architectural and landscape photography.

This location is especially magical during sunrise. Arriving early allows you to capture the soft, warm morning light illuminating the historic stone walls and the half-timbered tower, often complemented by a gentle, atmospheric mist from the nearby riverways. The preserved ring wall makes for excellent leading lines in your composition.

Walternienburg is easily accessible and makes for a great excursion in the region. If you are traveling by train, the nearby Güterglück station provides a convenient connection, bringing you very close to the location. By car, it is just a short drive from the city of Zerbst. Parking is incredibly easy—there is a large parking area located right by the street, meaning you are only a quick two-minute walk away from the historic castle grounds.
