Germany Rayonhaus (Steinigstraße)

The historic Rayonhaus on Steinigstraße is a remarkable architectural survivor from Magdeburg's era as a massive Prussian fortress. Built in the designated military zone surrounding the city walls, these unique timber-framed structures were strictly required by military law to be constructed without heavy stone foundations. This ensured they could be rapidly dismantled or burned down to clear the line of fire in the event of an enemy siege. While very few of these fascinating buildings remain today, this particular house has been beautifully preserved. Today, the building is operated by a newly forming community cooperative and houses a wonderful, inviting pub with a charming beer garden, making it an excellent historical subject that seamlessly blends into the vibrant local culture.

The intricate timber framing of the historic facade provides a striking visual contrast to the surrounding conventional residential buildings of the neighborhood.
