The Magdeburger Rathaus, accompanied by the famous Magdeburger Reiter monument, is the magnificent historic centerpiece of the Alter Markt in downtown Magdeburg. While much of the city was tragically destroyed in the past, the city hall was meticulously restored to preserve its traditional grandeur. Directly in front of the building stands the iconic gilded equestrian statue, which famously depicts the first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto the Great. As one of the oldest equestrian monuments north of the Alps, it serves as a proud symbol of the city's rich medieval history. Today, the expansive square remains the vibrant heart of the city, hosting the lively traditional weekly markets.

The vast, open space of the Alter Markt gives you plenty of room to find the perfect composition. The classic and most striking angle involves using the gleaming Magdeburger Reiter as a strong foreground subject, perfectly framed against the elegant historic facade of the city hall in the background. Visiting during the golden hour of the early morning or late afternoon is highly recommended; the warm sunlight beautifully illuminates the historic masonry and makes the gilded statue shine brilliantly against the sky. Located right in the pedestrian-friendly city center, the Alter Markt is exceptionally easy to reach. There are multiple large underground parking garages just a short walk away, and the area is perfectly connected to the local tram network.
