The Magdeburger Reiter is one of the most culturally significant and recognizable monuments in the city center, standing proudly on the Alter Markt directly in front of the historic Rathaus. Crafted around 1240 by the highly skilled artisans of the Jüngere Magdeburger Werkstatt, it holds the prestigious title of being one of the oldest freestanding equestrian statues north of the Alps. The magnificent gilded sculpture is widely believed to depict the first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto the Great, accompanied by two symbolic maiden figures. While the brilliant statue shining on the square today is a masterfully crafted bronze replica—the fragile medieval original is kept safe in a local museum—it flawlessly captures the regal grandeur of the city's rich history.

Photography Tips

The brilliant gilded surface of the monument makes it an incredibly striking subject, but it can cause harsh reflections under direct midday sunlight. Photographing during the softer light of the early morning or the golden hour of the late afternoon helps beautifully accentuate the intricate details of the rider and the accompanying figures while capturing the warm glow of the gold. Shooting from a low angle allows you to majestically frame the glowing equestrian figure against the open sky, or you can step back and use the elegant architecture of the adjacent Rathaus as a classic, cohesive historical backdrop.

Travel Information

Because it is centrally located on the bustling Alter Markt right in the heart of Magdeburg, reaching this iconic monument is completely effortless. The square is highly pedestrian-friendly and excellently integrated into the local tram network, with stops just steps away. If you are driving, there are several large, convenient underground parking garages situated right in the immediate vicinity. The historic square is also surrounded by a variety of cozy cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal place to take a break and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the city center after your photography session.
