The historic warehouse building situated along the Niels-Bohr-Straße in the Handelshafen is a magnificent remnant of Magdeburg's booming industrial past. Dating back to the opening of the commercial port in 1893, the imposing red-brick architecture bears a striking resemblance to the famous Speicherstadt in Hamburg. Today, this beautiful building is a centerpiece of the Wissenschaftshafen (Science Port), an area currently undergoing a massive and exciting urban revitalization. While many of the surrounding historic silos and storehouses are being meticulously converted into modern residential lofts and research facilities, the area strongly retains its raw, historic charm. It is a fantastic location to experience and document the rich industrial heritage of the city.

Photography Tips

For the absolute best perspective of this impressive brick warehouse, position yourself directly on the opposite side of the harbor basin. This vantage point allows you to capture the entire imposing facade of the building beautifully reflected in the calm waters of the port. The location is especially spectacular during the late evening hours. As the sun sets behind the building, it creates a stunning silhouette and casts a warm, golden glow over the industrial landscape. The juxtaposition of the historic masonry with the ongoing modern construction in the surrounding area also provides fantastic opportunities to playfully document the urban transformation of the city.

Travel Information

The Wissenschaftshafen is located just north of the city center and is highly accessible. If you are arriving by car, there are various parking opportunities along the streets, such as the Niels-Bohr-Straße, and near the newly developed areas. The district is perfect for an extended urban exploration on foot. As you walk through the old port, you can discover numerous preserved industrial monuments, including historical cranes and old railway tracks. After capturing the historic warehouses, the charming Café Treibgut offers a wonderfully cozy and picturesque spot right by the water to relax and take in the unique atmosphere of this rapidly changing neighborhood.
