The Wachturm Prinzesschen in Barby is a magnificent architectural remnant of the town's medieval past. Situated in the Salzlandkreis, this striking structure is one of only two surviving watchtowers from the original 14th-century city fortifications. The tower boasts a fascinating history, originating as a core component of a former noble border castle and uniquely constructed upon a historic foundation of pile walls and ancient oak planks. It received its highly picturesque, current appearance during the 18th century. The building features elegant Renaissance-style profiled sandstone surrounds, but the absolute highlight is its stunning half-timbered upper section, added in 1750, which is beautifully adorned with remarkable carved wooden masks depicting the four seasons.

Photography Tips

The green space surrounding the tower offers fantastic opportunities for creative framing. Shooting from a low angle allows you to use the lush, tall grass or out-of-focus foliage in the foreground to add incredible depth and a soft, organic feel to your composition. Visiting during the golden hour is highly recommended; positioning yourself so the sun flares beautifully through the adjacent weeping willows or directly behind the tower creates a wonderfully warm, romantic atmosphere that highlights the historic timber. When setting up your shot, be mindful of the modern security cameras mounted on the stone wall directly next to the tower, as you may want to carefully adjust your angle to frame them out and preserve a purely historic aesthetic.

Travel Information

The charming town of Barby is beautifully situated near the confluence of the Saale and Elbe rivers, making it a highly scenic destination for a day trip in Saxony-Anhalt. Reaching the historic center is very straightforward by car, and you can easily find convenient public parking in the immediate vicinity of the old fortifications. The Wachturm Prinzesschen is located in the northeastern part of the historic city wall. Taking a relaxing walk along the preserved sections of this medieval ring perfectly allows you to explore the tower on foot while seamlessly discovering the rich, quiet history of this idyllic riverside town.
