The Winterlinde, affectionately known by locals as the Hexenbaum or Hexenlinde, is an absolutely breathtaking natural and historical monument perched directly upon the Burgruine Lauenburg in the Harz mountains. Over the centuries, this majestic linden tree has grown completely intertwined with the medieval stone ruins. Its massive, twisting roots have cascaded down and across the remaining fortress walls, creating a spectacular natural tunnel that visitors can actually walk underneath. Located near the village of Stecklenberg, this enchanting site perfectly blurs the lines between ancient human architecture and the relentless, resilient power of nature.

Photography Tips

The immense scale of this sprawling root system is the undeniable visual highlight of the location. Placing a person directly underneath the natural root archway is an excellent way to provide a clear sense of scale and boldly emphasize the sheer size of the overhanging tree. Photographing from within the ruins looking outward allows you to elegantly frame the lush green canopy and the bright sky through the dark, twisted silhouette of the roots and the crumbling stone masonry. The soft, dappled light filtering through the leaves creates a deeply mystical, fairytale-like atmosphere that perfectly suits the "Hexenbaum" moniker.

Travel Information

Reaching the Burgruine Lauenburg is a highly rewarding experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The ruins are wonderfully accessible via a highly scenic hike starting from Stecklenberg, seamlessly following the picturesque and relaxing path along the small Wurmbach stream. This beautiful, forested trail is an absolute must-do when visiting the region. Furthermore, the area is a fantastic destination for avid hikers collecting stamps for the popular Harzer Wandernadel, with several dedicated stamp stations conveniently located directly along the route and near the historic ruins.
