Germany Windmühle Parey
The Windmühle in Parey is a beautifully preserved Paltrockwindmühle situated on the southern banks of the idyllic Kühns Loch in the Elbe-Parey municipality. The site possesses a deeply fascinating history: the original mill standing in this exact location was famously the last commercially wind-powered mill in the GDR, before being tragically destroyed by a lightning strike in 1983. The current heritage-protected structure, which replaced it, was originally constructed in 1946 in Frenz and was meticulously relocated and rebuilt in Parey in the early 1990s. Featuring an impressive louvred sail cross and a traditional wind rose that automatically turns the massive wooden body into the wind, it stands today as a magnificent testament to historical milling technology in the Jerichower Land.
Photography Tips
The unique, ground-reaching wooden cladding and the intricate historic mechanics of this mill make it a truly fantastic subject for architectural photography. To best capture its imposing scale and scenic context, position yourself slightly back along the banks of Kühns Loch; this allows you to elegantly use the tranquil water as a beautiful, natural foreground. Photographing during the golden hours of the early morning or late afternoon provides wonderfully warm, directional light that highlights the rich, organic textures of the wooden boards and casts striking shadows through the large sails. If the wind rose has actively turned the mill, carefully adjust your framing to capture the sweeping wooden wings against a clean, uncluttered sky.
Travel Information
Reaching this historic monument is incredibly convenient, as it is located immediately adjacent to the highly popular tourist destination, "Lieblingsplatz Parey." This vibrant lakeside facility provides excellent, easily accessible parking just a very short walk from the mill. After taking your time to admire and photograph the historic architecture, the surrounding area offers the absolute perfect setting to relax. You can comfortably enjoy a delicious meal or a fresh cup of coffee directly by the water, and even rent a pedal boat to explore Kühns Loch from a highly scenic, aquatic perspective, making this an exceptionally well-rounded day trip.
