The Wasserburg Gommern is a highly significant cultural monument with a deeply layered history in the Jerichower Land. Originally established as a Slavic wallburg in the 10th century and later expanded into a medieval fortress consisting of a Vorburg and Kernburg in 948, the site was entirely transformed in 1578. Elector August of Saxony commissioned the master builder Paul Buchner to dismantle the old fortress and reconstruct it into an elegant hunting lodge (Jagdschloss). The resulting structure was built using distinctive quartzite rubble stones sourced from nearby quarries around Plötzky. Today, surrounded by a picturesque moat and open fields, this unique estate beautifully captures the region's aristocratic and architectural heritage.

Photography Tips

Taking to the air with a drone provides a phenomenal perspective of the castle's isolated position, perfectly framing the historic quartzite walls and the reflective waters of the surrounding moat. However, because the estate is beautifully open to the adjacent fields, you can also easily capture spectacular ground-level architectural shots from the perimeter even if you keep the drone packed away. Photographing during the golden hour highlights the warm, rugged textures of the ancient stone and creates beautiful, symmetrical reflections on the calm surface of the water.

Travel Information

Gommern is a charming small town that is exceptionally accessible, whether you are arriving by train or driving via the A14 across the Elbe from Schönebeck or taking the A2. Since it is located so close to Magdeburg, it makes for an incredibly convenient and stress-free excursion for you. Beyond admiring the historic Wasserburg, the surrounding area is packed with natural highlights. The historic quartzite quarries near Plötzky and Pretzien have beautifully transformed over the years into stunning, forest-lined swimming lakes—including the Felsensee, Blauer See, Silbersee, and Königssee. Combining a visit to the castle with a refreshing swim in these lakes or a hike to the impressive Fuchsberg inland dune near the Kulksee makes for an absolutely perfect day trip.
