The Taufwiesenberge nature reserve, located in the municipality of Möser within the Jerichower Land district, is a fascinating and diverse 40-hectare biotope. Its unique geographical position, almost completely enclosed like an island by the Elbe River, the Niegripp Connection Canal, and the Elbe-Havel Canal, has given rise to a distinctive landscape shaped by historic intensive sand mining. On the rolling dunes and former spoil heaps, you will find extensive dry sand grasslands and sparse gray club-awn grass communities that transition into a tranquil, open pine forest with Scots pine, silver birch, and aspen. Managed in part by the NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage, this strictly protected area offers a crucial haven for highly specialized species like the Hoopoe, the Blue-winged Grasshopper, and the Antlion.

Photography Tips

The steppe-like open areas, in direct contrast with the dark conifers, present fantastic motifs for authentic nature and landscape photography. A winding, unpaved sand path that gracefully curves through the dry grass and scattered pine trees serves as a perfect natural leading line, providing great spatial depth[cite: 6]. This spot reveals its full photographic potential during the late evening, when the warm, low-angled backlighting bathes the sparse vegetation and the tree canopy in a soft, glowing golden light[cite: 6]. For dedicated nature observers, it is highly recommended to use long focal lengths to capture the varied and often elusive insect and birdlife of these undisturbed dry zones from a safe distance.

Travel Information

The Taufwiesenberge area is an ideal destination for hikers and photographers seeking tranquility to experience the untouched flora and fauna of the Jerichower Land, away from the typical tourist routes. The area is easily accessible for exploring on foot, for instance along the historic embankment of the former Berlin Railway, which marks the southwest boundary of the reserve. Since this is a strictly protected nature reserve (NSG 0189) and a European Special Protection Area for birds, all visitors must stay strictly on the designated paths. This is essential to ensure that the extremely sensitive pioneer plants on the sand grasslands and the local wildlife are not disturbed.
