Germany Bismarckturm Burg
The Bismarckturm in Burg bei Magdeburg is an impressive historical monument standing proudly on the Flämingberg, a slight elevation historically known as the Haug'scher Windmühlenberg. Inaugurated in March 1907 to honor the first German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, this 27-meter-high observation tower features a striking architectural mix of brickwork beautifully accented with rugged, unhewn granite boulders along its base and projecting corners. Financed originally through enthusiastic local donations, the structure has survived a highly turbulent history. It served as a military anti-aircraft observation post during World War II, was later renamed the "Flämingturm" and eventually bricked up and abandoned during the GDR era. Thankfully, following a passionate community initiative, the tower was comprehensively restored between 2006 and 2008, allowing it to reclaim its status as a premier landmark in Burg, fittingly known as the "City of Towers".
Photography Tips
Taking to the air with a drone provides a phenomenal opportunity to capture the imposing height of the tower against the sweeping, flat landscape of the Jerichower Land and the distant, historic skyline of Burg. Flying during the golden hours of sunrise or sunset casts a wonderfully warm light on the red brickwork and heavily emphasizes the rough, three-dimensional textures of the embedded granite stones. However, because this is an aerial spot situated near the town, it is absolutely essential to strictly adhere to local drone regulations. You must ensure you do not fly over any restricted zones, maintain a safe, respectful distance from nearby residential properties, and secure any necessary flight permissions beforehand to guarantee a safe and legal flight. For ground-level photography, the massive fieldstones at the base provide excellent, highly textured foreground elements for wide-angle architectural shots.
Travel Information
Located in the eastern part of Burg near the street Neuenzinnen, the Bismarckturm is highly accessible for visitors exploring the district. Thanks to the extensive, dedicated renovations by the local heritage association, the tower is completely intact and regularly opened to the public. When open, visitors can climb the interior staircase all the way to the top viewing platform to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding region. It serves as a fantastic, historically rich excursion that perfectly complements a broader walking tour of the architectural highlights, historic churches, and public parks scattered throughout Burg.
