The Wasserturm an der Hubbrücke, historically referred to as the "Akku-Haus" (accumulator house), is a striking brick monument situated directly along the Elberadweg in Magdeburg. Originally built in the 1890s, the tower housed a high-pressure water accumulator used to power the hydraulic lifting mechanisms of the adjacent railway lift bridge. After falling into severe disrepair and standing as an abandoned shell amid the modern redevelopment of the Elbbahnhof district, the heritage-listed structure was saved by local investors. Undergoing an extensive €300,000 renovation starting in 2017, the tower was beautifully revitalized. Today, it features meticulously cleaned yellow and dark clinker brickwork, a brand-new slate roof, and a modern glass extension. The interior has been brilliantly repurposed into a unique 30-square-meter guest apartment, creating a fascinating architectural contrast between 19th-century industrial heritage and modern design.

Photography Tips

The striking blend of the historic, Gothic-style clinker brick and the sleek new glass extension provides an incredibly dynamic subject for architectural photography. Because the tower sits right on the river promenade, you can easily use wide-angle lenses to capture it in the same frame as the massive, heavy steel framework of the neighboring Hubbrücke. The golden hour in the late afternoon or early evening is the absolute best time to shoot here, as the warm, low-angled sunlight beautifully illuminates the freshly cleaned brick facade and creates stunning reflections on the glass addition. Use the paved paths of the Elberadweg as natural leading lines to draw the viewer's eye directly to the structure.

Travel Information

Located in a prime riverside position on the Elbe promenade in the heart of Magdeburg, the tower is exceptionally accessible for pedestrians and cyclists exploring the city. It serves as an effortless and rewarding stop while taking a stroll along the Elbe or heading towards the nearby Rotehorn Stadtpark. Since the building has been converted into a private guest apartment, the interior is not open for public viewing. Nevertheless, admiring the restored exterior from the outside provides a fantastic glimpse into how the city successfully breathes new life into its historic industrial architecture.
