The Sudturm of the former Brauerei Bodenstein (later known as VEB Bördebrauerei) in Magdeburg's Alte Neustadt district is a monumental piece of local brewing history and a rapidly fleeting "Lost Place." Founded in 1823 by August Leberecht Bodenstein, this site was the oldest brewery in the city and a pioneer in industrialization, being among the first in Magdeburg to utilize steam and ice machines. The site's most prominent surviving feature is the massive, 38-meter-high malt silo and brewhouse constructed in 1936. After operations ceased shortly after reunification in 1991, the majority of the heritage-listed complex was demolished in 2006, leaving only the towering Sudturm behind. With imminent plans to finally revitalize the grounds and convert the historic tower into residential lofts, this is your absolute last chance to experience and photograph this imposing structure in its raw, decaying state before it is permanently transformed.

Photography Tips

Capturing the sheer scale of the 38-meter-high malt silo from the street level requires a wide-angle lens to fit the entire structure into your frame, though stepping further back along Sieverstorstraße can help minimize heavy perspective distortion. The raw, decaying facade of the tower is perfectly suited for moody, atmospheric photography. Shooting on overcast days or during the blue hour heavily emphasizes the gritty, post-industrial aesthetic of the "Lost Place." Look for interesting foreground elements along the perimeter fence to add depth and scale to the towering concrete and brick structure looming in the background.

Travel Information

Located on Sieverstorstraße in Alte Neustadt, the site is highly accessible from the street. However, because it is an abandoned industrial ruin slated for imminent, major construction work, the grounds themselves are fenced off and highly unsafe to enter. It is strictly advised to admire and photograph the Sudturm solely from the public sidewalks. The impending revitalization of the area makes a visit highly time-sensitive; it is a fantastic opportunity to document a vanishing chapter of Magdeburg's industrial heritage before modern gentrification completely reshapes the block.
