The main building of the former Diamant-Brauerei, located on Lübecker Straße in the Neue Neustadt district, is a striking piece of Magdeburg's industrial history and a highly captivating "Lost Place." Tracing its origins back to 1841, the brewery expanded massively over the decades to become the largest brewing operation in the Province of Saxony by the 1940s. It was famously known for its patented "Diamant" brand and the highly recognizable advertising slogan, "Stadt und Land trinkt Diamant!". Despite suffering severe damage during World War II, it was rebuilt and operated as a state-owned enterprise (VEB) during the GDR era—even producing the popular Soviet beverage Kvass—before finally ceasing brewing operations in 1994. Today, the grand, decaying main building stands as a powerful monument to the city's brewing legacy. However, with imminent plans to completely redevelop the historic site into modern residential housing, this is a fleeting opportunity to witness the structure in its raw, abandoned state.

Photography Tips

The imposing, deteriorating facade of the brewery offers a fantastic array of rough textures and geometric patterns that are absolutely perfect for urban decay and industrial heritage photography. Using a wide-angle lens allows you to capture the grand, imposing scale of the historic architecture from the street level. A telephoto lens is highly recommended for safely isolating smaller, fascinating details such as broken window panes, weathered brickwork, and surviving industrial remnants without needing to approach the structure. Shooting under heavily overcast skies or during the moody light of the blue hour dramatically enhances the nostalgic, post-industrial atmosphere of the ruins.

Travel Information

Situated directly along Lübecker Straße, the former brewery site is very easily accessible via Magdeburg's tram network, making it a highly convenient stop for anyone exploring the Neue Neustadt district. Because the property is an abandoned industrial ruin slated for imminent, extensive residential construction, entering the buildings or the fenced-off grounds is highly dangerous and strictly prohibited. You can safely admire and photograph the impressive exterior and the scale of the complex entirely from the public sidewalks. Visiting this spot immediately is highly recommended to capture its authentic "Lost Place" character before the upcoming renovations permanently transform the block.
