The Otto-von-Guericke-Denkmal is a grand Neo-Baroque monument dedicated to one of Magdeburg's most famous sons and the reason—alongside Emperor Otto the Great—why the city proudly markets itself as the "Ottostadt." While it sits directly next to the Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus) and the Alter Markt, the specific square where the monument stands is officially named "Bei der Hauptwache." Unveiled in 1907 and designed by sculptor Carl Echtermeier, the bronze seated statue honors Guericke's legacy as both a long-serving mayor of Magdeburg and a brilliant scientist. He is most famous for proving the existence of the vacuum and the immense force of atmospheric pressure. He demonstrated this in the 1650s with his legendary "Magdeburg hemispheres" (Magdeburger Halbkugeln) experiment: after pumping the air out of two hollow copper hemispheres, he showed that even two large teams of heavy horses pulling in opposite directions could not tear them apart. The monument's pedestal features beautiful bronze reliefs that actually depict this exact experiment, alongside a historical view of the city.

Photography Tips

Capturing the seated bronze statue against the historic backdrop of the Rathaus provides a classic, dignified architectural portrait of the city's heritage. To highlight the rich historical context, take time to focus on the elaborate Neo-Baroque pedestal, the water-spouting masks, and the detailed bronze reliefs illustrating the famous horse experiment. Shooting during the soft morning light or the late afternoon golden hour helps minimize harsh, contrasting shadows on Guericke's face and beautifully illuminates the natural green patina of the aged bronze. A tighter crop can help isolate the statue from the bustling pedestrian traffic of the city center.

Travel Information

Situated right in the historical heart of Magdeburg at "Bei der Hauptwache," this monument is an essential, highly accessible stop for anyone exploring the city. It is located just a few steps away from the Alter Markt, the Johanniskirche, and the Elbe promenade, making it a perfect anchor point for a comprehensive sightseeing walking tour. The monument is freely accessible year-round in the public square. While walking through this area, keep an eye out for various artistic representations of the "Magdeburger Halbkugeln" scattered throughout the surrounding streets, which playfully celebrate Guericke's enduring scientific legacy.
