The Salbker Wasserturm is a striking decommissioned water tower and a defining landmark of Magdeburg's Salbke district. Constructed in 1893–1894 based on the patented Intze principle, it originally supplied water to the nearby royal railway workshop, widely known today as the RAW. Rising over 35 meters, the tower features an exquisite blend of multi-colored brickwork, elegant sandstone elements, and a distinctive riveted iron dome with a central chimney. After decades of decay, the tower and its adjacent pump house were beautifully restored by the city and reopened in 2013. Surrounded by the tranquil, well-maintained Turmpark, the site stands as a proud testament to the region's railway history—especially significant right now as the massive adjacent RAW grounds prepare for a major transformation into modern residential and creative spaces.

Photography Tips

The multi-colored brick facade and ornate sandstone details are best highlighted during the late afternoon golden hour when the warm light accentuates the rich textures of the masonry. Positioning yourself further back within the surrounding Turmpark allows you to capture the structure's impressive height and its unique iron dome cleanly against the sky. For a more dynamic composition, utilize the park's pathways or the lush greenery as natural leading lines pointing toward the tower. Because the neighboring RAW area is on the verge of significant revitalization, framing the historic tower against the shifting industrial landscape provides a fantastic narrative contrast between historic heritage and modern urban renewal.

Travel Information

Located in the southern district of Salbke, the Turmpark offers a peaceful, green environment that is perfect for a relaxing stroll. Following its extensive renovation, the tower was converted into an observation point, with viewing windows integrated directly into the dome to offer panoramic views of the Elbe River and the surrounding city. However, access to the interior and the viewing platform is strictly regulated and typically managed by the local H2O association. It is highly recommended to check their official opening hours or arrange a guided tour in advance if you plan to climb to the top.
