Germany 'Kiek in de Köken'
"Kiek in de Köken" (Low German for "Peek into the Kitchen") is a fascinating medieval watchtower and one of the best-preserved remnants of Magdeburg's historic city fortifications. Erected in 1431 by the city's citizens—against the fierce opposition of the local Archbishop—it was initially built to defend the southeastern corner of the city from potential Hussite attacks. The quirky name stems from the legend that guards stationed in the tower could look directly into the Archbishop's kitchen in his neighboring palace. Over the centuries, the surrounding ground level was raised significantly; the modern Schleinufer is about five meters higher than the original riverbank, burying the tower's true base. Having survived numerous structural transformations and repurposings—from a military prison in the 18th century to a garden shed, and even a propaganda memorial hall during the National Socialist era—it stands today with its post-war flat tented roof as a proud architectural witness to Magdeburg's turbulent history.
Photography Tips
The tower's prominent position right on the Schleinufer offers excellent opportunities for historical architectural photography. Photographing from the lower street level emphasizes the tower's remaining height and its sturdy, square structure, while shooting from the elevated Fürstenwall promenade provides a completely different, eye-level perspective of the upper sections. The rough, aged textures of the stonework create a beautiful visual contrast when framed against the modern street or the flowing Elbe River in the background. Early morning light gently illuminates the eastern facade facing the water, while the late afternoon and golden hour provide a moody, dramatic backdrop that perfectly suits the medieval masonry.
Travel Information
Located prominently between the Elbe River and the historic city center, the tower is easily accessible for pedestrians exploring the Schleinufer or the scenic Fürstenwall promenade. While the exterior is a fantastic photo motif at any time of day, you can also explore the interior to dive deeper into its history. The city provides access through official guided tours organized by the Magdeburg Tourist Information year-round. Additionally, the tower features seasonal opening hours (typically from May through October, on Tuesdays and Fridays between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, excluding public holidays). It is a perfect historical stop when taking a walking tour from the Magdeburg Cathedral down to the riverfront.
