The Fahnenmonument, officially known as the "Monument der Völkerfreundschaft" (Monument of International Friendship), is a striking piece of GDR-era monumental art situated directly along the scenic Elbuferpromenade near the Schleinufer. Unveiled in the 1970s, this massive concrete sculpture depicts stylized, soaring flags waving in the wind. Today, nestled within a small surrounding park, it has organically evolved from a state monument into a vibrant, modern urban hub. The wide, smooth concrete steps and platforms at the base of the sculpture have been passionately reclaimed by the city's youth, making it the premier open-air meeting point for Magdeburg's local skate scene. Every afternoon and evening, skaters gather here to practice tricks, hang out, and wind down by the river, giving the historic site a pulse of energetic, contemporary street culture.

Photography Tips

This location provides a fantastic, versatile playground for both architectural and action photography. The sweeping, brutalist curves of the concrete flags make for bold, high-contrast structural shots, especially when you use the open sky as a clean, negative-space background. In the late afternoon and golden hour, the area comes alive with skateboarders, presenting the perfect opportunity to capture dynamic, fast-paced street culture. To effectively freeze the skaters mid-air, rely on a very fast shutter speed. Dropping to a low shooting angle is highly recommended here—it not only exaggerates the height of the skate tricks but also allows you to beautifully frame the imposing monument or the flowing Elbe River directly behind the action.

Travel Information

Prominently located right on the Elbe promenade, the Fahnenmonument is exceptionally accessible on foot or by bicycle. It serves as a natural, lively rest stop if you are walking or riding along the riverfront from the nearby historic city center or the Petriförder. It is a fantastic place to simply take a break, look out over the water, and soak in the relaxed, youthful atmosphere. To experience the spot at its absolute best, plan your visit for the late afternoon or early evening. This is when the local skate scene is most active, allowing you to seamlessly transition from energetic sports photography to capturing a peaceful sunset over the Elbe River.
