Standing as a towering monument to Magdeburg's industrial past, "Kran 20" is one of the last surviving historic harbor cranes located in the revitalized Wissenschaftshafen (formerly the Handelshafen). Specifically classified as a full-portal luffing jib crane (Vollportal-Wippdrehkran) dating back to the 1950s, this massive steel structure was originally used to transfer heavy bulk materials like gravel between cargo ships and the freight trains that ran directly underneath its wide legs. While the harbor once bustled with the transshipment of regional sugar and potash, today the quiet harbor basin and its preserved cranes offer a fascinating glimpse into mid-20th-century logistics and maritime heritage.

Photography Tips

The sheer size and intricate steel lattice of the crane make it an exceptional subject for industrial photography. Shooting from across the harbor basin allows you to capture the entire structure cleanly, often yielding striking reflections on the calm surface of the water. To emphasize the crane's towering height, stand directly beneath the portal where the old railway tracks still lie, and shoot upwards to highlight the geometric patterns of the steel girders against the sky. Photographing during the blue hour or late afternoon adds a moody, cinematic atmosphere that beautifully complements the raw, mechanical aesthetic of the port.

Travel Information

Located along the Werner-Heisenberg-Straße on the eastern edge of the harbor basin, the crane is freely accessible and very easy to reach when exploring the Wissenschaftshafen. The entire surrounding area has been beautifully transformed into an open-air museum of industrial history. You can easily spend an afternoon walking the promenade, combining a visit to the crane with other nearby technical monuments like the historic chain towboat "Gustav Zeuner," the old diving bell ship (Taucherschacht II), and the imposing ruins of the Hafenmühle.
