Magdalenenkapelle is a picturesque, high-Gothic chapel nestled along the Elbe River, sitting directly above the Schleinufer. Originating in 1315 as a Corpus Christi chapel, this charming rubble-stone structure is uniquely integrated into the remnants of the old city fortifications. It is historically significant as one of the few religious buildings in Magdeburg to have largely survived the devastating bombings of World War II; although its roof was destroyed, its thick walls and stone vaults endured. Today, it stands proudly alongside the neighboring Sankt Petri and Wallonerkirche, forming a magnificent triad of historic churches near the Petriförder. Together, they offer a stunning architectural ensemble that provides a powerful glimpse into the city's medieval and early modern past.

Photography Tips

The small, elevated square located directly in front of the chapel offers an absolutely perfect vantage point. Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended here. As the sun rises over the Elbe in the east, you can beautifully frame the chapel's silhouette with the morning light gently cutting past its historic stone walls. Utilizing a slightly wider angle allows you to capture the full structure along with the quaint stair tower on its western side. By positioning yourself carefully on the square, you can incorporate warm, atmospheric sun flares into your composition, highlighting the peaceful, historical atmosphere of this quiet corner of the city.

Travel Information

Located right by the historic riverfront, the chapel is incredibly easy to reach on foot from the city center or while strolling along the Elbe promenade. Because it forms a trio with the other two historic churches at the riverfront, this area is an essential stop for anyone interested in architecture and local history. The quiet, elevated position not only provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city but also offers fantastic views down toward the river and the nearby riverboat docks.
