The historic skyline along Magdeburg's Elbe riverfront is defined by a magnificent trio of religious buildings: the quaint Magdalenenkapelle, the towering St. Petri, and the grand Wallonerkirche. Traditionally, the absolute best vantage point to capture this architectural "Dreigespann" together in a single frame has been the pedestrian and cyclist bridge spanning the busy Schleinufer, connecting the elevated church forecourts directly to the Petriförder promenade below. While this specific bridge was recently dismantled due to structural safety concerns, the city plans to rebuild it. Even in its current transitional state, the elevated approaches and the future footprint of the new bridge offer an unparalleled perspective of these resilient, centuries-old structures standing proudly side-by-side above the modern city traffic.

Photography Tips

Photographing from this elevated alignment allows you to compress the three distinct churches into one cohesive, powerful cityscape. To ensure the towering spires of St. Petri and the Wallonerkirche remain perfectly upright in your frame without heavy distortion, keep your perspective as level as possible rather than tilting steeply upwards. Early morning is a fantastic time to shoot here, as the rising sun over the Elbe bathes the eastern stone and brick facades in warm, golden light. Alternatively, visiting during the blue hour provides a stunning, moody backdrop, as the churches are beautifully illuminated from below, contrasting sharply with the deep twilight sky and the light trails of cars passing on the Schleinufer beneath you.

Travel Information

Situated right at the border of the historic Altstadt and the Elbe River, this location is an essential stop on any Magdeburg walking tour. Although the direct pedestrian bridge over the Schleinufer is temporarily out of service pending its reconstruction, the area remains highly accessible. You can easily navigate via nearby ground-level crosswalks to transition between the riverside Petriförder and the elevated church grounds. The temporary absence of the bridge adds a unique, raw element to the current urban landscape, and exploring the immediate vicinity still grants you exceptional, unobstructed views of the city's most famous historic ensemble.
