The Königstein is arguably the most striking and dramatic section of the Teufelsmauer (Devil's Wall), a breathtaking, jagged rock formation in the Harz foreland. Stretching for about 500 meters along the northern banks of the Bode river between Weddersleben and Neinstedt, this awe-inspiring natural monument features massive, vertical sandstone fins piercing the landscape. Prominent crags include the towering Adlerfelsen (the highest point at 185 meters), the "Großmutter," and the "Teufel" (also known as the Westturm). The site is steeped in history and local folklore; its name derives from "Kehnstein" (Stone of Proclamation). Johann Wolfgang von Goethe famously visited the site in 1784, and thanks to Landrat Carl Weyhe, the rocks were placed under strict nature protection as early as 1833 to save them from being entirely quarried away. Today, this mythical, cinematic landscape—which even served as a filming location for a classic 1970s DEFA fairy tale—remains one of the most spectacular destinations in the region.

Photography Tips

The sheer, jagged profiles of the rock formations are an absolute dream for landscape photography, especially during the golden hours of the early morning or late evening. During these times, the low sun casts deep, dramatic shadows and bathes the rugged sandstone in a warm, striking glow. The wooden walkways and observation platforms built along the southern side provide excellent, elevated vantage points and serve as brilliant leading lines guiding the viewer's eye through the terrain. If you visit in the early morning, you can often capture atmospheric mist rising from the adjacent Bode river, adding an incredible layer of mystery to the towering stone pillars.

Travel Information

This location is highly accessible and perfect for a hiking trip, with convenient parking available nearby. A beautiful, well-maintained trail system allows you to walk directly along the Bode river and loop around the rock formations. To balance tourism with vital nature conservation, the local authorities have installed wooden boardwalks that allow you to get up close to the rocks without damaging the sensitive flora. Hikers can also find a stamp station (No. 188) for the popular Harzer Wandernadel, along with a small botanical show garden and idyllic orchards (Streuobstwiesen) dotting the surrounding landscape.
