The former slate quarry in Lehesten is one of Thuringia's most fascinating industrial heritage sites. Once a major slate-mining center, the area now features dramatic rock walls, abandoned industrial structures, and a deep quarry basin that has gradually filled with water.

What makes this location particularly interesting is the combination of industrial history and nature reclaiming the landscape. The old wooden mining structures, towering chimney, and steep slate cliffs create an almost cinematic atmosphere. During autumn, the surrounding forests turn golden yellow and orange, adding beautiful colors to this otherwise rugged industrial landscape.

Photography Tips

For this shot, I used a wide-angle perspective to capture the former quarry's impressive scale, including the historic mining structures, steep rock walls, and dark water below.
The old wooden tower and brick chimney serve as strong focal points, while the surrounding autumn trees add color and depth to the composition. Try experimenting with different viewpoints along the accessible paths to emphasize the contrast between industrial architecture and nature.

Overcast conditions work particularly well here, as soft light reveals details in the dark slate cliffs without creating harsh shadows. Autumn is especially photogenic when the colorful foliage contrasts with the grey rock formations.

Travel Information

The former slate quarry is located near Lehesten in southern Thuringia, close to the border with Bavaria. The area is part of the historic Lehesten slate mining landscape, where visitors can discover the region's long tradition of slate extraction.

Explore the historic quarry and its preserved industrial structures through the designated visitor areas of the former mining site, including the Technisches Denkmal Historischer Schieferbergbau Lehesten. Check current opening hours and access arrangements before visiting, as some sections may only be accessible during guided tours.

September and October are particularly beautiful months to visit, when the surrounding forests display their autumn colors. The site is also interesting year-round for industrial and architectural photography.

Important: The quarry has extremely cliffs, unstable rock surfaces, and deep water. Stay within permitted visitor areas, respect barriers and warning signs, and never approach unprotected quarry edges for a photograph.
