The former slate quarry in Lehesten, Thuringia, is a fascinating example of how nature gradually reclaims an industrial landscape. Once an important slate-mining center, the area now features impressive rock formations, historic mining buildings, and beautiful quarry lakes surrounded by dense forests.

The larger quarry lake is particularly photogenic during autumn, when the surrounding trees turn golden yellow and orange. What makes this location especially interesting is the old, dead tree trunks emerging from the dark water, creating an almost mysterious atmosphere against the colorful forest backdrop.

Photography Tips

For this shot, I used a telephoto zoom lens from an elevated viewpoint near the museum's main buildings. Instead of capturing the entire quarry lake, I focused on a smaller section of the opposite shoreline, emphasizing the contrast between the colorful autumn forest, dark water, and dead tree trunks.

A focal length between 100 and 300mm works particularly well for isolating details and compressing the different layers of vegetation.
Overcast conditions are ideal for this composition, as the soft light brings out the autumn colors without creating harsh reflections on the water. Calm conditions are especially rewarding when dead tree trunks and the surrounding forest create subtle reflections on the lake's surface.

Travel Information

The former slate quarry is located in Lehesten, southern Thuringia, close to the Bavarian border. The area is part of the historic slate-mining complex, home to the Technisches Denkmal Historischer Schieferbergbau Lehesten.

You can capture this perspective from the upper viewpoint near the museum's main buildings, overlooking the larger quarry lake. You don't need to descend toward the water, making it a convenient location for telephoto landscape photography.

The best time to visit is during late September and October, when the surrounding forests display their beautiful autumn colors. The lake is also worth photographing during other seasons, especially when mist or calm water creates atmospheric conditions.

Check the museum's current opening hours and access arrangements before visiting, as some areas of the former quarry may have restricted access. Stay within designated visitor areas and keep a safe distance from the steep quarry edges.
