Germany Sunrise Reflections at Drei Gleichen Castles

The Drei Gleichen region in Thuringia, Germany, is famous for its three historic hilltop castles: Wachsenburg, Mühlburg, and Burg Gleichen. Surrounded by rolling hills, forests, and picturesque countryside, the area offers some wonderful opportunities for landscape photography.

This particular viewpoint overlooks a small lake with Wachsenburg Castle standing on a distant hill. Shortly before sunrise, the landscape transforms into a beautiful silhouette, while the colorful morning sky reflects perfectly on the calm water. It's a peaceful, atmospheric view of one of Thuringia's most recognizable castle landscapes.

For this particular shot, I arrived well before sunrise to capture the beautiful colors of the early morning sky. Deep blue clouds, intense orange light along the horizon, and reflections on the lake created an almost perfectly symmetrical composition.

A wide-angle or standard zoom lens works particularly well here, letting you capture both the dramatic sky and its reflection. Position the horizon near the center of your composition to emphasize the symmetry.

Expose for the bright sky to preserve the beautiful sunrise colors while letting the surrounding hills and Wachsenburg Castle fall into dark silhouettes.

Calm weather is especially important for this composition, as even a little wind can disturb the reflections.

The Drei Gleichen castle region is located southwest of Erfurt, near the towns of Wandersleben, Mühlberg, and Holzhausen in central Thuringia.
This photograph was taken from the shore of a small lake overlooking Wachsenburg Castle, which sits prominently on a hill above the surrounding countryside. The area is easily accessible by car, although reaching individual viewpoints may require a short walk.

The best time to photograph this perspective is shortly before sunrise, especially on calm mornings with interesting cloud formations. Autumn is especially beautiful, with colorful landscapes, cooler temperatures, and the possibility of morning mist.

I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before sunrise to find your composition and capture the changing colors. Bring a tripod if you're planning to photograph in the low light before dawn.

The surrounding Drei Gleichen region is also worth exploring during the day, with several hiking trails and viewpoints offering beautiful perspectives of all three historic castles.
