Mühlburg Castle is one of Thuringia's famous Drei Gleichen castles, perched on a hill overlooking the picturesque countryside near the village of Mühlberg. Its medieval ruins, impressive defensive walls, and distinctive stone tower make it a beautiful subject for landscape and aerial photography.

From above, the castle's historic architecture stands out against the surrounding forests and rolling fields. Especially in autumn, golden foliage, green woodlands, and warm morning sunlight create a wonderful atmosphere.

The castle is also an excellent place to capture the characteristic landscapes of central Thuringia.

Photography Tips

Sunrise is particularly recommended for aerial photography at Mühlburg Castle. Shortly after sunrise, warm light illuminates the historic stone walls and tower, creating beautiful contrast with the darker forest below.

A slightly elevated diagonal perspective works particularly well, keeping the entire castle complex visible while including the rolling countryside in the background.

In autumn, look for compositions that pair golden foliage with the warm tones of the castle walls. A wide-angle drone camera is ideal for showing the castle within its landscape, while a telephoto camera can isolate architectural details.
On colder autumn mornings, mist may develop in the surrounding valleys, potentially creating even more atmospheric photographs.

Travel Information

Mühlburg Castle is located near Mühlberg in the municipality of Drei Gleichen, approximately 20–25 kilometers southwest of Erfurt. It is part of the famous Drei Gleichen castle ensemble, together with Wachsenburg and Burg Gleichen.

You can reach the castle on hiking paths from Mühlberg, making it an attractive destination even without a drone. The surrounding area offers several viewpoints with beautiful perspectives of the castle and the Thuringian countryside.

For autumn photography, late September through October is particularly interesting, depending on how the foliage develops. Arriving before sunrise is recommended to prepare for the first warm light.

The nearby Wachsenburg and Burg Gleichen are also worth visiting so that you can photograph all three historic castles in a single excursion.
