On the small island of Nissiros you can find several craters that were created due to vulcanic activity. The "Stefanos Crater" ist the biggest one with over 300m in diameter. Hot steam and gases still leak from holes in the ground. There is a strong smell of brimstone all over the place.

Travel Information

Nisyros can be reached for day trips from Kos and also from Rhodos. The distance from Rhodos is much bigger, though. The day trips usually include the bus ride to the caldera. The way from the rim down to the bottom takes about 15 to 20 minutes and you need sturdy shoes.
