Hong Kong Wah Tak Building
Wah Tak Building is a tenement building located in the Yau Ma Tei district of Kowloon, HK. The building was completed in 1964, most likely to house the flood of refugees fleeing Communist China into then British-ruled Hong Kong. Whereas many other nearby tenement buildings of that era have been torn down and redeveloped into modern skyscrapers, Wah Tak Building has persisted into the modern era. The building is popular with urban photographers owing to its eye-catching red striped exterior painting.
Photography Tips
Definitely use a wide angle lens, and a tripod may help if that's what you you prefer. This building facade faces South, and given that HK's latitude is directly on the Tropic of Cancer, it is always lit up by the sun. Weekends may be less crowded. This photography spot is located right next to a busy wholesale fruit market, so be prepared to have to shuffle around as produce is being wheeled around you. For the most iconic shot, wait until a red taxi or red fire engine comes into view.
Travel Information
The location is a short walking distance from Yau Ma Tei MTR subway stop (about 150 metres) so that's your best way to access this spot. Alternatively, there are plenty of buses that stop nearby. If traveling by taxi, ask specifically to be taken to "Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market / 油麻地果欄" and you'll be dropped off right at this spot.
