Iceland Church in Hellnar
The small Hellnar Church is one of those simple Icelandic buildings that becomes especially photogenic because of its surroundings. Standing almost alone in the open landscape of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, its white walls and weathered red roof create a beautiful contrast against the coast's muted colors. I photographed it as a snowstorm began to move in, giving the scene an even more isolated, atmospheric feel. However, this is a location that works year-round, with each season creating a completely different backdrop.
Photography Tips
For this composition, I used a telephoto lens and photographed the church from farther away. The longer focal length compresses the perspective, visually bringing the ocean and distant background much closer to the building. Keeping the composition very simple and symmetrical also works particularly well here. Moody weather, snowfall, or low clouds can add atmosphere, but don't skip the location on a clear day as the minimal architecture makes Hellnar Church an interesting subject in almost any conditions.
Travel Information
Hellnar is located on the southern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and is an easy stop to include while driving around the peninsula. The church is close to several other coastal highlights, making it a great short photography stop rather than something you need to plan an entire day around. In winter, conditions can change incredibly quickly – as they did during my visit – so keep an eye on the weather and road conditions even when the sky still looks relatively calm.
