Iceland Reykjanes - Karlinn
Karlinn is one of the most distinctive sea stacks on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula. Rising dramatically from the Atlantic just off the rugged coastline, the dark volcanic rock is constantly surrounded by powerful waves and sea spray. Especially in strong surf, the location perfectly captures the raw character of Iceland’s southwest coast.
Photography Tips
This spot looks especially impressive when photographed with a telephoto lens, letting you isolate Karlinn and compress the waves around it. Sunrise or sunset can create beautiful backlight: position yourself so the low sun catches the spray from breaking waves, turning it almost golden while the rock remains a dark silhouette. A fast shutter speed works beautifully for freezing individual droplets and the structure of the waves, while continuous shooting helps capture the exact moment a larger wave breaks. Check a weather app, as you want wind from the West for the waves to crash onto the shore.
Travel Information
Karlinn is located near the Reykjanesviti lighthouse and the Gunnuhver geothermal area on the Reykjanes Peninsula, making it an easy stop to combine with several other sights in the area. The coastline here is extremely exposed, and large waves can be unpredictable, so photograph from a safe distance and stay well away from the water's edge. Wind and sea conditions can also change quickly, but rougher weather often makes this location much more photogenic. You´ll have to pay for the parking!
