Iceland Kolugljúfur Canyon with Kolufoss Waterfall
The Kolugljúfur Gorge and Kolufoss, located within it, are a breathtaking natural wonder in northwestern Iceland, near the Ring Road in the Víðidalur Valley.
The gorge, which is about one kilometer long and up to 50 meters deep, was carved into the rock over thousands of years by the Víðidalsá salmon river. At the entrance to the gorge, the river plunges over two spectacular drops as Kolufoss: the upper fall is about 8 meters high, and the lower one is about 5 meters high.
The name derives from an Icelandic folk tale: The giantess Kola is said to have lived in the gorge, made her bed there, and fished for salmon in the river. A small bridge leads directly over the waterfall and offers visitors and photographers a fantastic view of the roaring water and the steep rock faces.
