While not beautiful in the traditional sense, this highland road gives you an idea of the vastness of Iceland‘s centre. It requires 4x4 but is an easy drive as you don‘t need to cross any rivers

4x4, the shortest route to the north (170km) - for the adventurous: I‘ve seen bycicles along the way...watch weather and road conditions (road.is). This route is usually open from July to September only.
