Iceland Godafoss Waterfall in Iceland
Goðafoss is one of the most impressive waterfalls in northern Iceland and becomes particularly spectacular during winter. The wide, horseshoe-shaped waterfall is surrounded by a completely white landscape, while the dark waters of the Skjálfandafljót River create a beautiful contrast against the snow and ice. From above, you can really appreciate the entire shape of the waterfall and see how the river cuts through the otherwise vast and open landscape.
Photography Tips
A drone offers one of the best perspectives of Goðafoss, especially if you want to capture the complete waterfall rather than focusing on individual sections. I positioned the drone at an angle instead of directly above it, allowing the river behind the falls to lead deeper into the landscape. Winter adds another dimension to the scene with icicles, frozen sections and snow-covered rocks. If the sun is low, shooting slightly towards the light can also illuminate the spray rising from the falls and create additional depth.
Travel Information
Goðafoss is located directly along Iceland's Ring Road in North Iceland, making it one of the easiest major waterfalls to include on a full-circle road trip. Parking areas and viewpoints line both sides of the river, and it is worth exploring both as the perspectives are quite different. In winter, the paths around the viewpoints can become extremely icy, so spikes for your shoes are highly recommended. If you're planning to fly a drone, always check the current local restrictions and conditions before taking off, as regulations can change and the waterfall is a popular visitor site.
