Iceland Kolgrafarfjörður Bridge, Iceland
The Kolgrafarfjörður Bridge is one of my favorite road trip perspectives on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The road cuts straight across the fjord, surrounded by water on both sides before continuing towards the snow-covered mountains. Especially in winter, the combination of the almost monochrome landscape, dark water,r and narrow road creates an incredibly minimalistic scene that perfectly captures what driving through Iceland can feel like.
Photography Tips
This location is made for a drone. Flying directly above the bridge reveals its unusual shape and turns the road into a strong leading line through the entire frame. I particularly like positioning the drone symmetrically behind the bridge and including plenty of the surrounding fjord and mountains to emphasize the landscape's scale. A single car on the road can strengthen the composition and provide a strong sense of scale. You gotta be lucky with the weather tho. Fresh snow often melts quite quickly so close to the ocean.
Travel Information
The bridge crosses Kolgrafarfjörður on the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and sits directly on the main road around this part of the peninsula, making it an easy stop on a road trip. There is no need for a long hike – the main attraction here is really the landscape surrounding the road itself. In winter, check road, wind, and weather conditions before stopping or flying a drone, as conditions around the exposed fjord can change quickly.
