In the early 1700s, Maharana Jagat Singh asked his father if he could take up residence in the pleasure palace Jagmandir with his ladies. The Maharana advised his son to build his own, an Island Palace. That palace is what we now know as Taj Lake Palace.

Today, its an exclusive hotel. You can’t step ashore there without a reservation or an invitation. It is still possible to admire the palace from the shore of Udaipur city and various hilltop spots that overlook it.

Travel Information

Walk down to the shore at dawn or shoot from the rooftop of a nearby hotel. I stayed in Jaiwana Haveli because I wanted the views and because it was very central.
