Ireland Pleasure Boats near Ross Castle Co Kerry

This spot is a glimpse of some of the many pleasure boats that are in the small rivers around Ross Castle that would be all used on Lough Leane during the summer months along with larger tourist boats.

This is a unique view of Ross Castle, located on the shores of Lough Leane within Killarney National Park. Instead of the classic frontal perspective, this shot is taken from a small inlet just off the main pier area, where boats rest quietly beneath the trees. The framing of the castle through the foliage and the rustic rowboat in the foreground creates a composition full of depth, texture, and storytelling — a perfect blend of history and nature.

Ross Castle dates back to the late 15th century and was once the stronghold of the O’Donoghue clan. Today, it’s one of the most photogenic stops along the Ring of Kerry and a must-visit for landscape and travel photographers exploring Ireland’s southwest.

Photography Tips

Getting the boats and the small stone bridge in the image.

The best time to photograph Ross Castle is during the early morning or late afternoon, when the soft light filters gently through the surrounding trees and casts a warm glow on the castle’s stone walls. Shooting from a low angle near the boat adds a strong sense of depth and perspective, guiding the viewer’s eye naturally toward the castle in the background. A 24–70mm lens works perfectly for this composition, allowing you to capture both the intimacy of the boat and the grandeur of the fortress in one balanced frame. To preserve the moody, cinematic feel of the scene, it helps to slightly underexpose the image and embrace the natural contrast between the shaded foreground and the illuminated structure. Using a polarizing filter can further enhance the result, reducing reflections on the water and making the greens and browns of the landscape stand out more vividly, while maintaining that distinct Irish softness in the atmosphere.

The spot is about 5 minutes walk from the Castle and there is a parking lot near by.
