Ireland Doonagore Castle
Doonagore Castle is a round 16th-century tower house with a small walled enclosure located about 1 km south of the coastal village of Doolin in County Clare, Ireland. Its name may be derived from Dún na Gabhair, meaning "the fort of the rounded hills" or the "fort of the goats".
Photography Tips
The best compositions can be found from the roadside viewpoints above Doolin, where you can frame the castle with wildflowers or the sea in the background. Use a telephoto lens (70–200) to compress the castle against the ocean, or a wider lens to include the rolling hills and coastline for context. Early morning or late afternoon light gives the stone tower a warm tone and contrasts with the surrounding landscape. Overcast days also work beautifully, emphasizing the moody Irish atmosphere. A drone can be useful as well!
Travel Information
Doonagore Castle is located just a short drive south of Doolin village along the Wild Atlantic Way in County Clare. You can view and photograph it directly from the road — there’s a small lay-by nearby for short stops, but be cautious of traffic on the narrow country roads. The site itself is private, so access beyond the gate is not permitted. Combine a stop here with nearby Fisher Street and the Cliffs of Moher for a perfect Doolin-area photography route.
