I took the path up a little ways and went as close to the edge as I could.

The Slieve League Cliffs (Sliabh Liag) in County Donegal are among the highest sea cliffs in Europe, rising over 600 meters above the Atlantic Ocean. From the main viewpoint, you can admire a breathtaking panorama of rugged cliffs plunging into deep blue waters. The texture of the rock face, patches of heather, and constantly shifting light make this one of Ireland’s most dramatic and awe-inspiring photography spots.

Photography Tips

Check the sun as it might not be as nice in the morning because of it being in shadow.

The main viewpoint offers several compositions — from tight telephoto shots emphasizing the steep rock faces to wide-angle views capturing the vast landscape. For a natural leading line, include the grassy foreground to draw attention toward the cliffs. The best light occurs during golden hour or under moody, overcast skies that bring out the colors and textures of the rock. Be mindful of strong winds at the cliff edge, and use a sturdy tripod if shooting long exposures. Drone use is permitted in some areas but check local regulations before flying.

Travel Information

You park at the visitor center and can walk up or take the bus. Walking is not for the unfit! It's quite a walk. We took the bus.

Slieve League is located near Teelin, County Donegal, about a 30-minute drive from Killybegs. The road to the viewpoint is narrow but well-paved, with parking available at both the lower and upper car parks. A short hike from the upper lot leads to the best vantage points. There are toilets and a small café near the visitor area. Bring warm clothing and proper footwear, as the weather can change rapidly. This location is part of the Wild Atlantic Way and is accessible year-round. Note: When I visited the road to the upper car park was closed, so I had to walk from the lower up the road. Payment is also required at the lower carpark!
