Ireland Watchtower new Slieve League Cliffs , Ireland
This dramatic viewpoint features the old watchtower perched on the edge of the cliffs along the road to the famous Slieve League Cliffs in County Donegal, Ireland. The rugged rocks, crashing Atlantic waves, and the isolated tower together create a truly cinematic scene. It’s a perfect stop to appreciate the raw power of the landscape even before reaching the main Slieve League viewpoint.
Photography Tips
The best perspective can be found from the trail or roadside section between the lower and upper car parks. A standard zoom lens (24-70mm range) works beautifully to isolate the tower against the ocean, highlighting the scale and steepness of the cliffs while retaining the surroundings in the picture. Overcast or moody weather enhances the dramatic atmosphere, while late afternoon light adds warmth and depth to the textures. Be mindful of strong winds and stay behind safety barriers — the cliffs are steep and exposed.
Travel Information
This spot is located along the access road to the Slieve League Cliffs, between the lower and upper parking areas. There’s a small lay-by where you can safely stop for a quick photo, but avoid blocking traffic. From here, it’s only a few minutes’ drive or a short hike to the main viewpoint. The area is part of the Wild Atlantic Way and can be visited year-round, but bring weatherproof clothing — conditions can change quickly on the exposed cliffs. Note: When I visited, the upper car park + road where closed, so I had to park at the lower and walk the rest. Paymend is also required for the parking.
