Ireland Cliffs at Erris Head Loop Walk, Ireland
The Erris Head Loop Walk, located at the northern tip of the Mullet Peninsula in County Mayo, offers one of Ireland’s most rugged and unspoiled coastal landscapes. The trail winds along dramatic sea cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, with panoramic views of sea stacks, rocky headlands, and endless ocean. Along the way, grazing sheep, colorful cliffs, and the sound of crashing waves create a truly immersive Wild Atlantic Way experience. This remote spot perfectly captures the raw charm of Ireland’s far west.
Photography Tips
Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the cliffs and the sweeping coastal scenery. A zoom lens helps to compress the landscape! Including local elements like sheep or fence lines adds scale and storytelling to your images. Soft morning light brings warm tones to the cliffs and highlights the texture of the grass and rocks, while overcast conditions enhance the moody atmosphere. The cliffs can be windy and uneven, so use caution when setting up near the edge, and bring a sturdy tripod if you plan to shoot long exposures.
Travel Information
The loop walk begins near Belmullet, with a small car park at the trailhead close to Glenlara. The route is about 5 km long and moderately easy, following a marked path that forms a scenic loop around Erris Head. Wear sturdy footwear and bring layers, as the weather can shift quickly on the exposed cliffs. When I visited, it was extremely muddy, so be aware of it! There are no facilities along the route, but Belmullet town — about a 15-minute drive away — offers cafes, shops, and accommodation. The area is part of the Wild Atlantic Way and is accessible year-round.
