Ireland White Cliffs of Ashleam road, Ireland
The White Cliffs of Ashleam on Achill Island, County Mayo, are one of the most spectacular stretches of the Wild Atlantic Way. This scenic coastal road winds along towering cliffs, offering panoramic views over the rugged coastline and turquoise Atlantic waters below. Seen from above, the scene unfolds with dramatic contrasts — the crisp white cliffs, emerald-green grass, and deep blue ocean. It’s one of those locations where Ireland’s wild beauty feels truly limitless.
Photography Tips
A drone is ideal for capturing the full grandeur of this location. Fly parallel to the road to showcase its curve against the cliffs and ocean, and include a vehicle or person to add scale. Late afternoon or golden hour light brings warmth to the cliffs and depth to the landscape, while midday light highlights the vivid blues of the sea. Be extremely cautious of wind conditions — this area is often gusty — and always maintain visual line of sight with your drone. For ground photography, wide-angle shots from roadside pull-offs also offer stunning perspectives.
Travel Information
The White Cliffs of Ashleam are located along the R319 on the southern side of Achill Island, County Mayo, just west of the famous Ashleam Bay viewpoint. There are several small lay-bys along the road where you can safely stop for photos or launch a drone. The road is narrow and winding, so drive slowly and pull fully off to the side when parking. The area is easily accessible by car or campervan, and the nearby village of Keel offers accommodation, cafés, and supplies.
