Ireland Kilkee Cliffs in Ireland
The Kilkee Cliffs in County Clare are one of Ireland’s most spectacular — yet still underrated — natural wonders. Towering stacks, deep sea inlets, and stratified rock layers tell the story of millions of years of Atlantic erosion. Unlike the more famous Cliffs of Moher, Kilkee offers a quieter, rawer experience — no barriers, no crowds, just the sound of the waves crashing far below. The sense of isolation and scale here is immense, especially when framed with a human figure to emphasize nature’s power.
Photography Tips
Position a person at the cliff's edge (safely away from the drop!) for this scale composition to highlight the immense proportions. A telephoto lens (70–200mm) helps compress the perspective and bring out the texture and depth in the rock formations. Overcast weather, common along the west coast, adds to the mood — creating soft, diffused light that enhances the contrast between the rugged cliffs and deep Atlantic blue. For drone photographers, this location also offers phenomenal aerial perspectives of the coast.
Travel Information
Located just west of Kilkee village, the cliffs are part of the Loop Head Peninsula and can be easily reached via the Kilkee Cliff Walk, a scenic 5 km trail along the edge. Several pull-off points and small parking areas are nearby, with clear paths leading to the viewpoints. It’s a great alternative to the busier spots further north — and completely free to visit.
