Italy Matera from the Caves

This is a great place for viewing the city from caves. There are about 8 or 9 caves easily accessible from here, and as the light goes and the city lights up, you'd struggle to get a better view.

Photography Tips

Don't expect to shoot from a cave and only do a single exposure... unless you want to lose the cave detail. A much simpler feat is to just take them during the day, not as dramatic but...
If you're crossing the gorge, you might want to settle for a desktop tripod rather than a full-size one.

Travel Information

The dirt road to the church is quite challenging. I recommend an off-road vehicle because these are some pretty big holes, depressions and ridges. Once there, walk past the church, which is still in use, and you will find the caves.
For those without a sportscar and who are staying in Matera, there is a path down and up the gorge, with a bridge in the middle. There is an iron gate at the Sassi end of the path. It appears to have been locked for a long time but there is a steady stream of people climbing over or around the edge - as if some kind of basic test of whether people are fit enough and determined enough to get across the gorge and back.
Avoid the heat of the day and if you're attempting it around sunset, you'll need a head torch so your hands are free.
