Italy Gaulschlucht
This atmospheric shot captures the mystical beauty of the Gaulschlucht (Gaul Gorge) in Lana, South Tyrol. The gorge is a hidden natural oasis carved by the lively Falschauer river, surrounded by steep moss-covered rock walls and dense forest. Throughout the canyon, several suspension bridges connect the hiking paths, allowing visitors to cross high above the rushing water while enjoying dramatic views into the gorge. The mix of rugged rock, flowing water, and autumn-colored trees makes this place feel both wild and peaceful at the same time.
Photography Tips
The gorge is naturally dark, with light filtering through the trees in soft, scattered patches. Visit during early morning or late afternoon for the most atmospheric glow and natural contrast. A polarizing filter helps bring out the rich greens of the moss and reduce glare on the water. Wide-angle lenses work beautifully here to capture the full depth of the canyon and the surrounding forest. If you want to include the suspension bridges in your frame, step back along the riverside trails for a more balanced composition. Long exposures can be nicely done here as well!
Travel Information
The Gaulschlucht is located at the edge of Lana and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. The main trail through the gorge is relatively easy and suitable for most visitors, though it can be slippery after rain. The suspension bridges add a bit of adventure and are safe and well-maintained. Parking is available nearby, or you can combine the visit with a longer hike toward the Brandis Waalweg or other scenic routes around Lana. It’s a perfect half-day activity for nature lovers, families, and photographers exploring the Merano region.
